A few weeks ago, my wife and I went to Mohegan Sun with some friends and family to celebrate her birthday. Despite only being an hour away from one of Connecticut’s two casinos, we don’t go all that often. Even with the recent legislation allowing sports gambling in the Nutmeg State, I just don’t find myself participating all that much, even from my couch. With that being said, I was at a casino, steps away from a sportsbook, during the first weekend of March Madness…the beer was cold, the vibes were good, so I put a few futures bets down on the 2025 New York Mets.
For the purposes of this exercise, I’ve listed the bets in order of their odds from most likely to most… ridiculous. There were a few bets that I was unsuccessful in placing at the sportsbook. I’m not sure if that was for my own safety or not, but I WAS able to place them from my couch. I’ll save those for the very end.
The NL East is going to be a bloodbath this year. Every game against the Braves or Phillies will have major playoff implications. If we want to make a deep playoff run, it starts with winning the division or grabbing the top Wild Card spot. 91 Wins should do that for us.
Clearly, MVP voters don’t give a damn about defense. If they did, Francisco Lindor would have won the 2024 NL MVP over Shohei Ohtani. Without Fransisco Lindor as the offensive, defensive, and emotional leader of the Mets, they would not have made the playoffs. Soto is my pick for NL MVP this year. He is the only hitter in the NL who can go toe-to-toe with Ohtani.
The expectations have increased every year since Steve Cohen bought the team. We made a deep run last year. There’s only one thing left to do, win the whole damn thing.
This was a troll bet. Clay Holmes looked great in spring training. Can you imagine if the Mets pitching lab turned a former Yankee reliever into a dominant starter? The Yankee fanbase would be quite upset. That outcome would be well worth the $5.
For some reason, the following two bets were not available for selection at the FanDuel Sportsbook kiosks. Casinos are pretty good at the whole getting you to gamble away your money thing, so maybe they were actually afraid to let me place the bets because they knew I was on to something. Either way, I had some funds in my account, so I placed them from my couch when I got home the next day.
This one seems like a no-brainer. The Mets have a ridiculous top half of the line-up and opponents will have to pitch to somebody. Alonso is 26 home runs shy of setting the Mets All-Time Home Run Record. Soto is coming off a career best 41 home runs, albiet at the lefty-friendly Yankee Stadium, we know what he’s capable of. Lindor has eclipsed the 30 home run mark each of the last two seasons. If Vientos avoids the dreaded sophomore slump, I will be $67.74 richer in October.
Mendoza should have been the Manager of the Year in 2024. With the payroll projected to be at $332 million in 2025, the expectations are insanely high. If Mendoza can meet those expectations, he is as deserving of this award as a manager who overperformes relative to the cost of their roster. Lock it in.
I’ll check back in on these bets during the all-star break.
